The federal government is getting 20 transformers and substations to improve the national power grid under the Siemens Presidential Power Initiative (PPI), the Minister of Power, Engr Abubakar Aliyu, has said.

Speaking at the closing session of the 5th National Council on Power (NACOP) in Abuja on Thursday, Aliyu said the transformers are already arriving.

He said, “Through the agreement with Siemens, orders had been made for the purchase of 10 morbid power transformers and 10 mobile substations.

“The 10 transforms to be situated across the country have started arriving.”

He also reiterated the government’s vision of attaining 30,000 megawatts of electricity by 2030 with 30 per cent of that coming from renewable energy.

“Renewable energy is taking the centre stage of the ongoing reforms in the power sector as it is visible from the ongoing and completed projects.”

He mentioned the 700MW Zungeru hydropower in Niger which, he said, is 97% complete; the 40MW Kashimbila hydropower in Taraba and the 40MW Dadin Kowa hydropower in Gombe.

The minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Muhammad Bello, represented by the executive secretary, Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), Shehu Ahmad, said: “The importance of the electricity value chain to the socio-economic development of Nigeria calls for synergy between operators and players within them.”

The NACOP has the objective of building synergy in policy formulation and implementation for the provision of adequate and reliable power supply nationwide.
