A grandmother, Ekaette Obot, has been arrested by the Nigeria Police, Akwa Ibom State Command for stealing and selling her grand-daughter for N200,000. Obot, who said she weeds for people for a fee, explained that she sold the child to free her daughter, 18-year old Blessing Okon of the burden. 

It was learnt that the grandmother, who was pregnant, was planning to also sell the baby once she was delivered of it. 

Speaking yesterday in Uyo, Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr. Adeyemi Ogunjemilusi, revealed that the police had also arrested 275 other suspects for various offences ranging from murder, armed robbery, kidnapping, rape, to cultism. 

He said most of the suspects had been charged to curt while others are being investigated, and that the police had already prosecuted 193 cases and secured 23 convictions.

He noted that 19 locally-made pistols; one pump action gun and one AK 47 rifle; one Toyota Camry saloon car with Reg. CAL 584 NF; one Toyota Corolla vehicle with Reg. No. AA 50 NRJ and a total of 52 ammunition were recovered from the hoodlums.

“An 83-year old woman, Mrs. Comfort Joshua was rescued from kidnappers’ den in Etim Ekpo Local Government Area on Thursday, July 19 and two of her abductors gunned down during exchange of fire with the police,” Ogunjemilusi said.

“We also rescued a two-year, four months old child, Miss Testimony Bassey ‘f’ from her abductors in Abia State where six suspects were arrested in connection with her abduction.

“A four-year old child, one Bright Monday, ‘f’ was rescued from her abductors along Aka Road, by IBB Roundabouts, Uyo, and four suspects have been arrested,” he stated.

Ogunjemilusi further added that three criminals specialising in vandalising and stealing of transformer armoured cables; solar panels and street lights, were also arrested and their loots recovered from Ikot Abasi and Abak LGAs. 

He said the command is determined to sustain the tempo in fighting crime and protecting lives and property in the State.

He mentioned that the police has increased visibility policing across the state to reduce the response time to distress calls.

He also noted that the command’s community policing approach has attracted them to the populace and created confidence in the minds of Nigerians.
