Trial began yesterday in Lagos of a 34-year-old pregnant woman, Happy Ademosun, who the police arraigned allegedly for stealing the sum of N2,095,000 that 17 girls were said to have contributed as ‘esusu’ (thrift) in her care.

The police said the girls contributed the thrift money that they gave to Ademosun between May 5 and August 30 this year at No. 7, Balogun Street, Gbara-Lekki, Eti-Osa local government, Lagos State.

Some of the contributors were named as Joy Bassey, Stella Afaha, Sandra Bassey, Beauty Peter,  Tosin Olanrewaju, Eva Peter, Gift Njoku and Lilian Uba.

The police alleged that Ademosun collected various amounts of cash on the pretence of being an esusu coordinator, allegedly knowing the claim to be false, and thereby committed an offence punishable under Sections 314 and 287 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State.

The accused person, who was arraigned before Magistrate O. O. Adeshina at the Igbosere magistrate court, Lagos, however, pleaded not guilty to the 34-count criminal charge the police preferred against her.

The court admitted her to N350,000 bail, while adjourning further hearing till October 16, 2019.
