Pregnant woman dies after alleged confinement by husband

The police in Kano have arrested one Auwalu Kabaki, a resident of Mariri quarters in Kumbotso Local Government Area of the state for allegedly killing his wife by locking her up for days in his house.

Chronicle gathered that neighbours of the suspect alerted the police following a strong odour they allegedly assumed to be coming out of the man’s house. The woman, who was nine-month pregnant at the time of her death, was presumed to have lost her life during a labour.

A neighbour, who preferred anonymity, said that “No one can give account on what transpired between the couple because since when they came to this place they don’t associate with anybody. You cannot even see almajiri begging in front of their house”, the neighbour added.

Firdausi Isah Musa, a relative to the deceased, told Chronicle that since when the couple got married, her late sister had never enjoyed the union which resulted in her becoming depressed.

“They got married about eight years and they were blessed with three children but all this while my late sister had been in dilemma as the husband used to lock her up in the house. He doesn’t allow her to associate with anybody even her relatives. It reached the point that she became depressed,” she said.

The spokesman of the Kano Police Command, Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa confirmed the incident, noting that investigation had commenced into the matter.
