The Ona of Abaji and chairman of the FCT council chiefs, HRM Alhaji Adamu Baba Yunusa has distanced himself from the meeting of the North Central Renaissance Movement (NRCM), a coalition leading the agitation for the presidency to be ceded to the north central zone in 2027.

Alhaji Yunusa, who spoke through his chief of staff, Dr. Sule Salihu Kakamba, reacted to a newspaper publication that the Ona of Abaji, Alhaji Adamu Baba Yunusa and convener of the NRCM, Professor K’tso Nghargbu held a closed door meeting in his palace recently.

He said the newspaper publication that he held a meeting with the leader of the NCRM Prof K’tso Nghargbu to agitate for ceding of the presidency or vice president position to the north central zone was misleading and damaging to him and entire members of his traditional council.

He said the palace received the leader of the NRCM Professor K’tso Nghargbu and his team on  April, 12, 2025, where the group said they decided to pay a courtesy call on him and to informed the palace of the group’s move to agitate for power shift to the north central zone.

“It is important for me to clarify that, I, as the Onah of Abaji and chairman of the FCT council of chiefs, do not engage in partisan political activities and do not support any political movements.

“As a traditional ruler, my primary responsibility is to uphold the cultural integrity and welfare of my people. And I have always been committed to fostering unity and development within our community. So the engagements I had with  the leader of the NRCM when they visited my palace led Prof. Nghargbu, was only to give them royal blessed, that was all, in which they left,” he said.

The monarch said he has been undated with several phone calls from different quarters he held a closed doors meeting with NRCM, which he said was not true, and that he never to endorse or participate in any political agenda.

Alhaji Yunusa, said immediately he received phone calls over the newspaper publication, he placed a phone call to the leader of the NRCM, Professor K’tso Nghargbu, who later wrote a letter of apology to him for causing disaffection and bringing the palace to disrepute.

“I therefore, urge the media to always verify their stories before going to press,” he added.

The monarch said he remained committed to advocate for the dignity and progress of his people while upholding the principles of his kingship, and will continue to serve as a unifying figure and ensuring that he respect the political neutrality of his office demands.
