A visit to Kado Fish Market in Life Camp, Abuja, revealed that some poultry farmers positioned themselves with their birds in a vehicle at the entrance of the market to attract buyers.
The reporter asked some of the poultry farmers who were there to market their products if the yuletide season will bring more money into their pockets.
“I hope so” Esther Eneche who came with a truck load of birds responded. “Usually Christmas period is the good time to sell all your chickens and make good money. But you know people are just complaining of lack of money everywhere.
“I have 300 birds to sell and I want to sell all of it this period.”
She said that she moved her products from one market to another within the FCT in an effort to meet her customers wherever they are.
When she was asked how many chickens she has sold today (Tuesday), she said: “I can’t really tell now until in the evening when I can reconcile the figures between what I brought to the market and what is left.”
The 3-month broilers she brought to the market were sold for between N1, 500 to N2, 000, depending on their sizes.
Deep into the market where the fish sellers were making brisk businesses, the reporter disguised as a buyer to determine the prices of the product, having been there few months ago.
The prices of fish have gone up unsurprisingly.
A carton of smoked fish known as “Maiduguri fish”, which initially sold for N20,000 was seen selling for N22,000 while the carton of smoked  cart fish from fish farms which initially sold for between N19,000 to N20,000 went for N22,000 to N23,000, depending on their sizes.
Even more expensive is the “Asa fish” which sold for N75,000.
Mohammed Ibrahim, a fish seller in the market said the fish has “more meat, less bones and taste better than others.”
 A plastic container of cart fish which contains 50 to 60 pieces was selling for N23,000 in the market.
The reporter saw many people buying the products with some of the sellers offering discounts of N1,000 to N2,000, depending on the product’s price.
At the section where people were selling tomatoes and other grocery items, NasiruBashiru was seen selling a small basket of tomatoes at N600, the same price for pepper.
But onions contained in the same type of basket went for N1,500 at the market.
