The principal of the Government Secondary School (GSS) Zuba, Mr. Segun Simeon Bankole, has called for the prioritisation of sports and other psychomotor activities in the nations’ education curriculum to ensure healthy Nigerian students.

 He made the call in Abuja at the 8th inter-house sports competition of the school.

 He said sports is an integral part of education as there are institutions of learning specialising exclusively on one aspect of sports or another and that Nigerian youths are lucky to have it integrated in the school system as co-curricular activities.

 Children, according to him, need to engage in sporting activities to burn excess sugar in their bodies.

 

 “Unfortunately, most of our private schools do not even have playgrounds. The attention is only on the cognitive and affective domains of education. What has happened to the psychomotor aspect? The focus should be on sound education and a sound body,” Bankola said. 

 

The Director, FCT Secondary Education Board (SEB), Hajiya Maryam Hassan, represented by Mr. Ibrahim Kperogi, said sports should be a major tool for the physical and mental development of children.

 She said Zuba was a major gateway to the FCT and that she was glad that GSS Zuba was using sports to capture the attention of students.

 At the end of the games that also included invitational relays and other activities, Red House (Ikwa) emerged overall winner with 298 points, while Green (Yimi) and Blue (Zuba) houses emerged second and third with 250 and 186 points respectively.
