A civic accountability organisation, the Coalition for Equitable Development and Fiscal Justice (CEDFJ), has called on President Bola Tinubu to prioritise the 2025 capital budget as a national emergency to strengthen the country’s economic recovery efforts.
In a statement signed by its President, Dr. Gbenga Akinbowale, and Gloria Maduegbuna, its National Secretary, the group said timely implementation of the capital budget is vital to sustaining public confidence and accelerating growth.
According to the organisation, effective execution of capital projects is key to improving infrastructure, boosting productivity, and ensuring that government reforms deliver tangible benefits to citizens.
“The 2025 capital budget should be treated as a national emergency. Each year, delays in project execution reduce the real impact of government investments, while inflation erodes the value of appropriations. This must be addressed to achieve the Renewed Hope Agenda,” the statement said.
CEDFJ commended President Tinubu’s economic reform efforts and urged greater coordination among government ministries, departments, and agencies to ensure that the gains of these policies are fully realised.
The group also encouraged the establishment of a direct presidential monitoring mechanism for capital releases, alongside quarterly performance reviews involving key fiscal institutions.
“The credibility of the Renewed Hope Agenda depends not only on how well the budget is designed but also on how effectively it is implemented,” Akinbowale stated.
He added that enhanced transparency, faster fund disbursement, and efficient project management would help sustain economic stability and improve citizens’ trust in government programmes.
