The Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee (LPPC) of the Supreme Court has appointed 57 lawyers to the rank of Senior Advocates of Nigeria.

Among the newly appointed lawyers are renowned Abuja-based lawyer, Ali Dussah Zubairu; UK-trained lawyer, Kelechi Nwaiwu; the Attorney General of Nasarawa State, Magaji Labaran; Osun State Attorney General, Oluwole Tolulope Jimi-Bada; son of a retired Supreme Court justice, David Ogenyi Ogebe; an academic, Professor Chima Josephat Ubanyionwu, and 51 others.

A statement by the Chief Registrar of the LPPC, Kabir Akanbi, on Thursday said the chairman of the committee, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, approved the 57 lawyers as a mark of professional excellence demonstrated and exceptional distinction either as advocates in the courts or as academics contributing significantly to the development of legal scholarship. 

He stated that during the session, the committee also considered three petitions submitted against certain applicants, which were dismissed after a thorough review found them to be lacking in merit.

“In accordance with the directives of the Body of Senior Advocates of Nigeria (BOSAN), all shortlisted prospective Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) conferees are required to attend and successfully complete the Pre-Swearing-In Induction Programme,” he said.

Meanwhile, the conferees have been warned in line with Paragraph 25(1) of the Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Guidelines and the provisions of Rule 393) of the Rules of Professional Conduct, 2023, from publishing of advertisements, congratulatory messages, or goodwill notices related to their nomination or conferment.

“Any breach of these provisions may attract sanctions for violations of statutory or ethical rules as expressly stated,” Akanbi said.

Meanwhile, the swearing-in ceremony for the 57 successful applicants is scheduled to hold on Monday, September 29, 2025.

Among the advocates are Theophilus Kolawole Esan, Fedude Zimughan, Ernest Chikwendu Ikeji, Victor Esiri Akpoguma, Leslie Akujuobi Njemanze, Akintunde Wilson Adewale, Preye Agedah, Omamuzo Erebe, Hannibal Egbe Uwaifo, Olumide Ekisola, George Ejie Ukaegbu and Oromena Justice Ajakpovi.
