The Governing Council of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, Anambra State, has appointed Professor Ugochukwu Anyaehie as the new substantive Vice-Chancellor for a single tenure of five years. He is set to assume office on November 19, 2025.

The appointment was confirmed on Sunday in Abuja by the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Barr. Olugbenga Kukoyi.

“I am pleased to announce Professor Bond Anyaehie as the substantive Vice Chancellor of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University after a thorough and transparent process,” he said.

Professor Anyaehie, a distinguished Physiology and Clinical Measurements scholar, brings nearly two decades of teaching experience from the College of Medicine at the University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus. He succeeds Professor Carol Chinyelugo Arinze-Umobi, who has served as Acting Vice-Chancellor following the reversal of the appointment of Professor Bernard Odoh by the President and Visitor to all federal universities, Bola Tinubu.

Upon his appointment, the new Vice-Chancellor expressed his vision to elevate UNIZIK’s standing nationally and internationally.

“Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport is one of the best in Nigeria so UNIZIK should also be the best university in Nigeria. I guarantee you that in the next six months UNIZIK will be well placed, its ranking will go to one of the best in Nigeria.”

Professor Anyaehie holds a first degree in Medicine and Surgery from Abia State University, Uturu (1998), a Master’s degree (2004), a Ph.D. (2009), and a Master of Public Health (2011).

He began his teaching career at the College of Medicine, Imo State University in 2002, first as a part-time lecturer before becoming full-time. He joined the University of Nigeria College of Medicine in 2007, rising to the rank of Reader, and was promoted to Professor of Physiology and Clinical Measurement in 2013.

Professor Anyaehie also served as Deputy Provost of the College of Medicine, University of Nigeria (2018–2022), and was Acting Provost at the College of Medicine, Imo State University, as well as a visiting professor on a pro bono basis from 2020 to 2022.
