A Professor of Oral History, Bolanle Awe, has called on government at all levels to make recourse to literary and debate societies in the effort at re-engineering the sagging educational system in the country.

Prof. Awe said debates nurtured rational thinking, organisation of thought and public speaking.

The professor who made this call during a debate competition organised for secondary schools in Ibadan by the Dorcas Oke Hope Alive Initiative (DOHAL), a charity arm of the Sword of the Spirit Ministries, commended the choice of topic for the competition: “Who Should Invest in Education, Parents or Government?”.

She said literary and debate societies were important in galvanising students’ interest in teaching and learning, and therefore commended the initiator of DOHAL, Bishop Francis Wale Oke, and his wife for establishing the foundation.
