The Professor, according to eyewitness account, was trailed by the gunmen to a private clinic in Kwangila, Zaria before he was shot dead.
“The gunmen opened fire on the professor as he emerged from the Marhaba Clinic here in Kwangila. The doctor was with a nurse and she was also shot by the gunmen but she is still in hospital. Our suspicion was that the gunmen were trailing the doctor before they shot him to death.
“After they ensured that they killed him, the gunmen fled on their motorcycle. The military at the nearby checkpoint pursued them, but because the military men were in their pick up van they couldn’t get to the gunmen as the gunmen had taken a tight route,” an eyewitness, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said.
The two other people were killed separately at different locations in Zaria, according to eyewitness account. The first person, a security guard at the ABUTH, was killed in the Dogarawa area of Sabon Gari, Zaria, while the other person lost his life when he was shot at a filling station close to the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology (NCAT), Zaria, Weekly Trust gathered.
Confirming the murder of Professor Mbibu yesterday, the Kaduna State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Aminu Lawal, said the police are trailing the gunmen.
“We were able to recover the motorcycle the gunmen used and we are doing everything possible to get them. The man that was shot at the filling station is still alive receiving treatment, according to my finding. He did not die and same thing with the nurse that was shot along with Professor Mbibu,” DSP Lawal said.
The Chief Medical Director of the ABUTH, Professor Lawal Khalid, described the murder of Professor Mbibu as unfortunate.
“The man was just a doctor, a medical doctor of international standard for that matter. One wonders what he has done to deserve this gruel murder. The loss of Professor Mbibu is not a loss for ABUTH alone, but the entire country and the world at large. He is one of our best hands in ABUTH. We pray that God would give his family, the entire ABUTH community and the country the fortitude to bear this great loss.
“It is also true that two other people were killed and one of them is our security man. The other person was brought here (ABUTH) for treatment after he was shot along with one other person at a filling station close to Aviation College. The person later died,” Professor Khalid said.
Gunmen have been on the rampage at the ancient city of Zaria since Christmas day where they killed three persons, including a cop at a beer parlour in the same Kwangila area.
In a recent interview with Weekly Trust over repairs of manhood, Professor Mbibu called for more funding of Nigerian hospitals to prevent professionals like him from shuttling between Nigeria and foreign countries to perform surgeries.
