Abuja is rated as having the best and cleanest water supply in the African Continent. However, over time, insufficient water supply vis-à-vis overstretched facilities, resulted in the suffering of the dwellers, which called for drastic amelioration. Some suburbs were noted to lack water for prolonged periods.
In order to solve this problem, Government embarked on the Gurara Water Transfer Project, to convey raw water from Gurara Dam, located 75 kilometres away in neighbouring Kaduna State, through 3-meter diameter pipes, to Lower Usuma Dam for FCT water supply. The project was also designed to generate 30MW hydropower as well as provide water for the irrigation of 6,000 hectares of agricultural land, fisheries and tourism development.
Prior to the arrival of the current administration, the implementation of the project had been riddled by poor funding due to inadequate budgetary allocations. But the provision of adequate funds for the completion of Phases 3 and 4 of the project, laying of new network of pipes and servicing of existing ones as well as construction of booster stations to ensure the pumping and sustenance of water pressure to all parts of the Territory, including areas of high topography (such as Maitama and Wuse II Districts) were seen to. The completion of this gigantic, multi-billion Naira project is a monumental achievement as a major accomplishment of one of the key components of the Transformation Agenda in the FCT. We, the residents of Abuja, are very, very happy about this.
