Former Vice President of the Nigeria Institute of Quantity Surveyors Kabir Moh’d Olayiwola has attributed failed and uncompleted  projects in the country to non-involvement of  quantity surveyors  in project budgetary processes by authorities.
Olayiwola who said this in an interview with our reporter said the trend of failed and abandoned projects will be tackled only if governments at all levels begin to involve professionals in project budgetary processes.
According to him, ignoring professionals will always lead to failed, abandoned or  project termination because the right cost is not determine at the right time, adding that nobody can be held responsible for it because  those that carry out the costing are neither professionals nor the right people for the job.
“Quantity surveyors are the first professionals to be consulted in developmental and infrastructural projects because you need to know how much you can spend on the project.
“They will determine the cost of construction of a project and can also work with them to ensure that what are on ground take care of the project but this is not the case in Nigeria,” he explained.
He said professionals are to blame for failed project if they were engaged for the job.
He stressed, “In our society today, no one takes responsibility because those employed to do the job are not professionals.”
Olayiwola explained that the nation can have better value for the money spent on projects only when quantity surveyors are used to determine all infrastructure and construction cost ambition before embarking on project.
“Since we are in the era of change, President Muhammadu Buhari should ensure that the change mantra is extended to all sectors of the economy, change from not using the right professionals on costing projects to using right professionals for good result,” he appealed.
