Proprietress of Jet Glorious Nursery and Primary school Yankaba, Mrs Evelyn Kayode has expressed concern over nonpayment of school fees by parents of some pupils.

Mrs Kayode, who stated this during the school’s 2017 Speech and Prize Giving Day, said the situation has negative impacts on many private schools in the state.

She said many proprietors of private schools in the state are facing some difficulties in running their schools due to insufficient funds.

The proprietress said though owners of private schools in the state had obliged by the law which mandated them to pay 10% tax to the government, however, parents were not paying their children’s school fees as at when due.

“We are not into this business to make money but to fill the gap and to make education accessible to any child of school going age. Public schools cannot accommodate all and therefore the need for private investors to also key into the sector. But the operational environment has not been conducive for private partners to complement government effort in the education sector.

“Apart from providing employment for some unemployed youth, we are also obliged by law to pay 10% tax to the government. You need money to pay staff and expand the structure of our schools. And all these should be financed from the school fees we charge but parents in most cases don’t want to live to their own responsibilities,” she said.

She appealed to parents to be up and doing in ensuring that their children get quality education that can enable them find a space in the fast evolving world.
