Stakeholders in the education sector have described the recent review of Nigeria’s national curriculum by the Federal Government as a welcome step toward addressing gaps in learning and preparing students for a rapidly changing world.
Speaking to newsmen at the inauguration of Aristeia Preparatory College in Port Harcourt, the proprietress of the institution, Modupe Ativie commended the Ministry of Education for what she called a bold and timely reform.
The Federal Government had announced the completion of a comprehensive review of the national curriculum for basic, senior secondary, and technical education.
The new framework is designed to reduce content overload, improve learning outcomes, and ensure Nigerian students are equipped with skills relevant to today’s global demands.
The review was carried out in collaboration with key agencies, including the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC), Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), National Senior Secondary Education Commission (NSSEC), and the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE).
Ativie noted that the revised curriculum, which emphasizes practical knowledge and skill acquisition, aligns with the vision of forward-looking schools across the country.
She noted that the success of the government’s curriculum review will depend not only on policy but also on the ability of schools to translate reforms into practice.
She stated institutions that blend strong academic foundations with relevant 21st-century skills such as languages, Artificial Intelligence, health and social care, and creative design will be vital in ensuring Nigeria’s young people are globally competitive.
According to her, “For these reforms to achieve their goals, implementation must be matched by centres of learning that uphold excellence, expose students to global opportunities, and build purposeful leaders.
“At Aristeia, our own commitment is to prepare young Nigerians not just for examinations, but for life beyond the classroom, including pathways to top universities around the world.”
Among dignitaries present was Magdalene Wilcox, Director of Secondary Education in Rivers State, who praised the facilities, security, and international standard she observed at the new college, urging its management to sustain the quality.
Executive Pastor of COZA Port Harcourt, Pastor Wole Soetan, who performed the tape-cutting, described the institution as a model of attention to detail and commended the calibre of staff recruited.
The Dean of School, Barr. Nneoma Ekeh, further detailed the college’s offerings, which include, IGCSE and A-Levels Programme, Artificial Intelligence and Robotics Program, Professional and Practical Life Skills Development, Jamb Preparatory Programme and lots more.
