Diana Eyo-Enoette is back, this time with a baby bump and shocking delivery—nearly right in the middle of a meeting.
At her wedding last year, she wore her white dress, cut her cake and drank her wine–and then she started a protest calling for more funding for health care in the country.
This year she used her baby bump [in photo album below] to an advocate for family planning, exclusive breastfeeding, immunisation and an end to poverty and hunger.
As a programme officer for Community Health and Research Initiative, she should know all about that but it turned dramatic on Friday—and ended with her going into labour in the middle of work.
She was attending the inaugural meeting of the Global Finance Facility to provide technical support for the working group.
“I was seated and taking notes when pains and discomfort started,” she recalls.
An elderly woman at the meeting thought Diana might be in labour.
“The country director of One Campaign saw me when I couldn’t move on our way to have lunch and called up her sister, who is an obstetrician and gynaecologist. She advised I go to hospital immediately.”
Throughout her pregnancy, Diana had kept up her work schedule coordinating meetings for civil society group and coalitions, and wouldn’t back down.
She managed a little lunch and returned to the meeting. Two and a half hours later, “the pains got worse and I couldn’t walk again.”
A colleague Ndidi Chukwu “got me a cab and I headed straight to the hospital alone but my husband was on the way to join me from his office.”
Her baby boy came shortly after—and his photo has been circulating through social media groups.
In reply to one post that asked her to take a break and not be seen anywhere near a meeting or workshop, Diana said, “Considering that labour started in a meeting and I spent the whole nine months working and travelling without leave, I deserve my rest. And please watch out for me so you can send me home if you see me. LOL.”
Along with her baby bump campaign, she has a message for women.
“The maternal journey is long and daring, but it’s precious, and the only thing a mother should aim for is the child’s wellbeing, where immunization and exclusive breastfeeding play a vital role.”
