The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has appealed to all students not to join the planned nationwide protest over the current economic hardship in the country.

Daily Trust reports that some youths are planning a nationwide protest between August 1 and 15 against the rising cost of living and economic hardship in the country.

In a statement personally signed by him on Friday, Pedro Obi, president of NANS urged students to “channel our energy towards constructive engagement and dialogue.”

The statement reads: “In these challenging times, our nation stands at a crossroads. The recent economic difficulties have understandably sparked widespread concern and a call to action from various sectors of society. As the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) President, I urge you to remain calm and not to join the planned nationwide protest at this moment.

“Our voices as students are powerful, and our unity is crucial. However, it is imperative that we channel our energy towards constructive engagement and dialogue. Protests, while a democratic right, must be considered carefully in the context of their potential impact on our academic pursuits and national stability.

“We are aware of the hardships faced by many Nigerians and share in the frustration over the current economic situation. In this regard, we call on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to take immediate and decisive steps towards implementing true federalism and restructuring Nigeria. These measures are essential to address the root causes of our economic woes and pave the way for sustainable development.

“True federalism will empower the states, foster healthy competition, and enhance accountability. It will enable each region to harness its unique resources and strengths, thereby contributing more effectively to the nation’s prosperity. Restructuring Nigeria will create a more balanced and equitable distribution of resources, reduce corruption, and promote efficiency in governance.

“We believe that through constructive dialogue and collaboration with the government, we can achieve these goals. NANS is committed to being a part of the solution and working towards a better future for all Nigerians.

“In conclusion, I urge all Nigerian students to stay calm and continue with their academic endeavors. Let us stand united in our pursuit of a restructured and truly federal Nigeria. Together, we can overcome these challenges and build a nation that meets the aspirations of all its citizens.”
