There was pandemonium on Wednesday morning in Ikotun area of Lagos following the killing of a 32-year-old man, one Segun Ahmed, by a mobile policeman.

The policeman was said to have gone to guard an automobile shop in the area when the incident occurred.

It was gathered that the yet to be identified Mobile policeman took to his heels when he discovered that the man had died.

Following the killing, there was pandemonium as street urchins and sympathisers took to the street in protest. The protesters, said to have been armed with weapons and fuel, allegedly threatened to burn down the auto shop, but for the quick intervention of some police men who arrived at the scene.

A witness, who was in the car shop during the shooting said the policeman was invited by the shop owner as street urchins, also known as  Area boys, were extorting him on a daily basis.

When our reporter visited the scene, policemen from the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), State Police Command and Ikotun Division were still on ground keeping vigil while the road was littered with broken bottles and bonfire made by the protesters.

Lagos State Police Public Relations (PPRO), DSP Bala Elkana, said the police were trying to trace the squadron the fleeing policeman came from. “We cannot say for sure that he is a policeman or not until we interview the man who invited him.

“According to the story making the round, the policeman used a pistol, whether it is locally made or not we don’t know, but investigation will determine that,” he also stated.
