Residents of Nayagota community in Gyel District of Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State on Monday staged a protest following the alleged killing of two women by yet-to-be-identified security operatives.
The protest, which caused tension along Bukuru Expressway, later moved to the Jos South Local Government Secretariat, where residents demanded justice for the victims.
One other person was reportedly injured in the incident.
Residents alleged that the women were shot in the early hours of Monday after approaching the operatives to find out why they had entered the community.
The Berom Educational and Cultural Organisation (BECO) Worldwide condemned the incident and called for a thorough investigation.
BECO President, Da Gyang Dudu Dalyop, said the community had become highly vigilant because of repeated attacks in the area.
He explained that residents became suspicious after seeing armed operatives in the community without prior notice.
“People only wanted to know who they were and why they had come. Given the insecurity the community has faced, they had every reason to be concerned,” he said.
Dalyop faulted the security operatives for failing to properly engage the community before entering the area.
“There should have been communication and sensitisation. Instead, the women who approached to ask questions were allegedly shot. There was no justification for using such force against unarmed civilians,” he said.
He urged the Commissioner of Police, the Department of State Services (DSS), the military and other security agencies to investigate the incident and ensure those responsible are brought to justice.
As of the time of filing this report, no security agency had claimed responsibility for the shooting.
