Protest: Police arrest 23 for setting Niger LG secretariat ablaze

Five teenagers were among 23 protesters paraded on Wednesday by the Niger State Police Command over an alleged violent protest in Tafa LGA of Niger State.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Ebenezer Danmamman, said the suspects engaged in criminal trespass, mischief by fire, office breaking, as well as belonging to an assembly of thugs and thieves.

Danmamman said the suspects set Tafa LGA secretariat and two cars ablaze and looted valuables.

He said, “Following the nationwide protest which commenced on 01/08/2024, unfortunately on the same date at about 1000hrs some miscreants of Tafa area of Kagarko LGA of Kaduna State, and that of Sabon-Wuse Tafa and Hayin-Dikko Gurara area of Niger State mobilised and stormed Tafa LGA secretariat of Niger State located along Abuja-Kaduna Expressway, Sabon-Wuse, Niger State.

 “The hoodlums vandalised the secretariat, partly set ablaze, two cars were also burnt and two others vandalised. They further looted office valuables such as computer, refrigerator, file cabinet, office ceiling fans, office chairs, television sets and office burglary proof. The police and other security agencies responded to the scene and a total of twenty-three (23) suspects were arrested with different dangerous weapons, while others were dispersed from the scene and most of the looted items were recovered, mostly from Kagarko in Kaduna State.”
