The National Parents Teachers Association in Nigeria (NAPTAN) has advocated for a law that will mandate civil servants in Nasarawa State to enrol their wards in public schools.

NAPTAN Chairman in Nasarawa State, Umaru Ebeyan, made the request on Sunday in Lafia saying, “Most public officials deliberately neglected public institutions because their children are enrolled in private schools both within and outside the country.”

According to him, there should be a law that would prescribe punishment for any official who failed to comply, or for such person be compelled to vacate his seat no matter which position he was occupying.

Ebeyan said: “It is a shame that public officials think that public money is good, but public institutions are not good enough for them and their children to patronise.

“They are bestowed with the responsibility to make the public institutions work, they either do it sincerely or all of us should face the effects of their actions.”

He attributed many factors that led to the falling standard of education in public schools to lack of motivation of teachers by government, delayed promotions for teachers for more than eight years, lack of annual increments, and lack of teaching aids.

The NAPTAN chairman called on the government to provide housing and other loans to teachers to motivate them and for others to join the profession.
