The Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate (PTAD) on Tuesday said it has verified over 720 pensioners of the defunct Nigerian Telecommunications Limited (NITEL) and its mobile subsidiary MTEL, held in Gombe for the North-East zone.

The directorate said the verification exercise was conduct to enhance prompt payment of monthly pensions of retirees and disengages staff of the telecommunication company.

The PTAD decried the absence of credible data of pensioners in the country in spite of earlier effort by the defunct Pension Office, stressing the need to verify all pensioners under the Data Base System (DBS) for effective resolution of complaints.

The management decries as worrisome the crisis bedeviling the pension scheme previously characterized by allegations of misappropriation of funds, maladministration, corruption, fraud as well as complaints by numerous pensioners.

They particularly decried the non-payment of monthly pension to the pensioners after retirement, commencement of payment of pensions and gratuities by instalment, removal of names on pension payment voucher, non-payment of harmonized arrears and irregular payment of federal pension.

The PTAD said it presently operates four pension departments that includes the police pension department, customs, immigration and prisons pension department and treasury funded parastatals pension departments.
