The Society for Public Health Professionals of Nigeria (SPHPN) is working on a post-COVID-19 health sector reform in the country through public health education and care of COVID-19 infected persons.
The President of SPHPN, Michael C. Asuzu, who retired recently, stated this yesterday when he was honoured by the society and the association of health experts in Abuja.
- Asuzu said the organisation was working on a stronger collaboration with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), the Federal Ministry of Health and state governments.
He further said the society was very hopeful that in no distant time the country would stem the tide of COVID-19 transmission.
Asuzu, who is a professor of disciplinary public health and community medicine at the University of Ibadan (UI), said public health was an enterprise and that everyone could join and contribute to the common good of all.
Dr. Mohammad Kawu, FCT acting Secretary of Health and Human Services, said Prof. Asuzu had been a beacon of advancement for public health and society at large and deserved honour and praise.
Prof Clara Ejembi, first female consultant physician in northern Nigeria, said Asuzu had traversed Nigeria and bred many health physicians, adding that SPHPN was the handiwork of Asuzu, a doyen and colossus in public health.
SPHPN was established in 2011 as an umbrella association for public health oriented associations and individuals and has the primary responsibility to strengthen primary health care in Nigeria, prevent diseases, promote and sustain healthy living, community engagement and rehabilitation.
