A student of Demonstration Standard College, Okene, a Kogi State government school, Goodness Honour, has emerged the overall winner of the “21 Kogi Young Scientist Governor’s Award (KYSGA-21) 2018 competition. The event was held for students in both public and private secondary schools across the 21 LGAs of the state.
The competition, which was keenly contested in various stages, also witnessed the emergence of Ogbonna John of Dynamic College, Ankpa and Hassan Shedrach of Saint Kizito Seminary, Idah clinching the 2nd and 3rd positions respectively.
The three students that emerged winners in the state category got laptop computers installed with educational software, textbooks and award plaques while those under the LGAs category got textbooks and award plaques.
Speaking at the presentation of prizes, the state commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Mrs Rosemary Osikoya, said the outcome of the competition was the manifestation of the commitment of the government to the development of the education sector in general and science education in particular.
She said the overall winner of the competition would represent the state at the “774 Young Nigerian Scientists Presidential Award (YONSPA) 2018” slated for November 22, at the national level.
According to her, the result showed that the public schools in the state had been elevated to the level that made their products to favourably compete with their counterparts in private schools.
She said the state government would continue to invest in education as it would employ more science, technical and vocational teachers in secondary schools. It will also provide the enabling environment for students to acquire the prerequisite skills to be self-reliant.
“The State Executive Council has also approved the establishment of additional 17 science and technical colleges across the state to complement the existing four.
“This will enable all the 21 local government areas of the state to have one technical college each, which have already been identified,” Osikoya said.
Responding, the overall winner, Goodness Honour, who attributed his victory to God and hardwork, thanked the government for giving them the opportunity to express their intellectual ability through the competition.
