Pupils of LEA Primary School in Paipe and Jahi have been given books, pens and other learning materials by a non-governmental organisation, Books Across Borders Initiative.

The chairman, board of trustees of the group, Iheoma Light Shedrack, said the donation was part of the group’s ‘one child, one book’ project which hopes to donate at least one million books before the end of the year to pupils and students in rural schools in Nigeria.

Shedrack said the project followed the group’s ‘one million book donation project’ for the third and last quarters of the year, adding that aside from donating books and setting up modular libraries, they have offered scholarships to exceptionally gifted but indigent students.

“We come here in solidarity with parents and teachers to show these children the importance of reading and education.  We want to re-engage their minds towards imbibing the culture of reading towards greater nation-building.

“In line with our slogan, ‘Read to Lead’, we believe that the best time to get them to take their studies seriously is now.  Nigeria needs them.  This is the right time to groom the researchers, the inventors, the innovators, the reformers, the agriculturists, ICT gurus and the leaders that the nation needs,” he said.

He said the group’s trustees are majorly creative writers and educationists.

The head teacher of LEA Primary School, Jahi, Jonathan Auta, commended the group for the donation and also appealed to them to assist the school in setting up a functional library.
