Experts in construction industry and President of the Quantity Surveyors Registration Board of Nigeria (QSRBN), QS Obafemi Oluwole Onashile has called for establishment of Building and Engineering Commission, BEC, as an agency to take control and regulate the construction market, with a view restoring permanent sanity to the sector.
QS Onashile said membership of the proposed regulatory agency will be nominees of the each of the regulatory bodies in the construction market, which include the nominee of the Federal Minister of Housing and Urban Development and Minister of Works.
He lamented that the construction market as it is today, is an open market with all sorts of people parading themselves as contractors, consultants, professionals, while in the real sense they are not what they claimed to be.
Speaking at the 2025 Annual QS Assembly and induction of newly registered quantity surveyors in Nigeria held in Abuja, QS Onashile emphasized on the urgent need for the Federal Government, professionals, regulatory bodies and other stakeholders to set up a central regulatory agency for the industry.
Onashile, who spoke further at the assembly with theme; “Enhancing the quantity surveyors’ capacity in building, engineering and infrastructure development contracts, dispute management and resolution”, argued that creation of building and engineering commission has become imperative in order to safe the sector from further unwholesome practices, especially the activities of quackery.
The QSRBN President stressed further that, the Building Code enacted in 2006 couldn’t perform the regulatory functions of the construction market because there are issues with it, which made it not to have been fully adopted.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Arc. Ahmed Dangiwa, who was represented by QS Pemi Temitope, assured of Federal Government”s resolved to actively engaging with stakeholders to design and implement policy reforms that foster transparency, professionalism, and accountability across the housing and construction value chain.
Arc. Dangiwa, however, announced that the ministry keyed into the vision of President Bola Tinubu’s administration Renewed Hope Agenda through landmark initiatives like Renewed Hope Cities and Estates, slum upgrade intervention and Public Private Partnership projects he said designed to address Nigeria’s housing deficit and modernize the urban spaces.
