The marriage institution is facing a serious challenge, which is the high rate of divorce and domestic violence. The challenges affecting marriages is taking a different and alarming dimension, that if not curbed can turn out disastrous. This week, we will be discussing qualities to look out for in a partner.
Aisha Muhammed, 38 year old, lawyer says to have a happy home we must make sure we look out for certain attributes in our partners. “He/she must be God fearing, humble and tolerant. To know how a man or woman will treat you as a wife or husband you must check his/her family background. How they behave will kind of tell how he/she will behave as a partner. He must also have a legit source of income that can cater for the basic needs of the family. As lack of financial capability is always a major cause of problem for couples in marriage.”
Hajara Idris, 37 year-old, accountant says must intending couples do not really fall in love but rather fall for wealth. “These days people don’t look at falling in love but rather look at how much the person they are getting married to has to offer. Being married and having the access to money are two different things. Being extremely rich and having the physical attributes should not be a major determinant when it comes to marriage. As long as partners use this as a determinant the marriage institution will always face challenges.”
Habib Haruna, 43 year-old, civil servant says, a God fearing partner is the best partner anyone can ask for. “A God fearing partner is essential to a happy relationship. A God fearing person will be tolerant and always want peace to reign in the home. One who isn’t God fearing doesn’t really care if his/her partner is happy or satisfied in the marriage or relationship. Also, someone with a bad temperament is no option for a peaceful spouse. People will promise to change after marriage. Never listen as they say such just to get you and once in there is no going back and that is where problem starts in marriage. Knowing the qualities of your spouse before marriage plays a very important role as it determines if you get to live a life of happiness or not.”
In addition to all that has been said, choose someone that understands you and you understand them and you both can tolerate each other. Also, your partner must be able to take decision on his/her own and not inviting family members to every misunderstanding they might have.
