He said crisis in the education sector has reached alarming state, demanding stakeholders to urgently salvage the situation.
Speaking at a maiden summit of the Nigerian Army Education Corps in Uyo, Akpabio said the situation where youth corps members have had to be returned to their alma mater by the National Youth Service Corps for withdrawal of certificates called for serious attention in the sector.
‘’The education sector is in a sad and sorry state. For the past five months our lecturers have been on strike and there is no end in sight. The qualities of graduate have become so worrisome that that the National Youth Service Corps has had to return some corps member to their alma-mata for withdrawal of certificates.”
He said the call for urgent intervention in the sector became necessary to ensure that government’s efforts in the provision of infrastructures are not in vain.
He expressed appreciation to the Nigerian Army Education Corps for its contributions to the development of education besides its statutory role of defending the territorial shores of the country.
The Minister of State for Education and Supervising Minister Nyesom Wike, in his key note address, highlighted reform to realise Education For All (EFA), the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the nation’s Vision 20:2020.
Wike who was represented by Mr. Daniel Ewaudoke of the Federal Ministry of Education charged the participants and the stakeholders in the sector to come with insightful and thought-provoking suggestions and resolutions that would stimulate new policies and initiatives to take sector to the next level.
