The Al-Furqan Deaf Islamic Da’wah Association, Kaduna State branch, has held a Qur’anic competition for hearing-impaired students across 13 local government areas of the state.

The annual competition is aimed at encouraging hearing-impaired students to showcase their knowledge of the Holy Qur’an in different categories.

Leaders of the competition, Ustaz Yasir Suleiman Kofa and Al-Ameen Interpreter, explained that four contestants were selected from each of the 13 participating local governments.

Students competed in four categories: one hizb, two hizb, five hizb, and tafsir of the Holy Qur’an.

Our correspondent reports that the winners in the one hizb category from Ikara Local Government and the two hizb category from Kaduna South Local Government each received N50,000.

However, the remaining two categories could not be concluded at the end of the event. Second-place winners in all categories were awarded N30,000 each, while third-place winners received N20,000 each.

Speaking at the occasion, Mahmud Lawal Isma’ila, member representing Zaria City Constituency in the Kaduna State House of Assembly, urged Muslim religious bodies to promote the use of sign language in teaching and reading the Holy Qur’an among the hearing-impaired.

He said sign language provides a unique and valuable means of acquiring Islamic knowledge for those who cannot speak or hear.

“This knowledge is very rare and unique, and it will assist hearing-impaired students in practicing Islam with ease as part of their religious obligations. I therefore urge all Islamic organizations to embrace this initiative and help integrate the deaf community into Qur’anic learning,” he said.
