Governments at all levels have been urged to subsidise the treatment of cancer in order to reduce its mortality rate in the country.
Radiologist and Senior Lecturer in the Radiology Department of University of Maiduguri, Dr. Zainab Mustapha, said that treatment for cancer is extremely expensive, adding that the high cancer mortality rate in the country is because of the inability of sufferers to settle treatment bills.
She stated this while sensitising members of the Quareeb family at its Annual Women’s Day celebration with the theme “Healthy Women: The Bedrock of Society,” in Lagos.
“If government cannot make treatment for cancer free, it should, at least subsidise it; it should build more radiotherapy centres that would be more accessible to patients in the country and also develop scheme for free cancer drugs to patients”, she said.
