Several residents of Egbeda Egga community in Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State have been rendered homeless as a rainstorm reportedly destroyed over 40 residential buildings.

Report from the community on Thursday noted that the unexpected rain that occurred on Tuesday and Wednesday was accompanied by a storm that destroyed churches, businesses and schools.

The National President of the Egbeda-Egga Development Union (EDU), Dr Emmanuel Dare Otitolaiye, said the scale of destruction has left many families struggling to cope.

He said, “Several residents have been displaced and are currently taking shelter with neighbours and relatives.

“We urge the authorities to provide immediate support for our people who have lost their homes, businesses and sources of livelihood”.

Dr Otitolaiye stressed further that the community requires emergency relief materials, including shelter, food and medical support, to help victims recover from the natural disaster.

Also, the Okun Development Association (ODA) expressed sadness over the natural incident that led to immense loss, and its attendants hardship on the residents of Egbeda-Egga community.

In a statement, the National Publicity Secretary of ODA, Dayo Thomas, said, “We believe that collective efforts can help alleviate the suffering and rebuild the community. We stand in unwavering solidarity with the affected families and individuals, acknowledging their pain and struggles”.

A source from the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) claimed that the agency is already aware of the incident.

“The Agency is aware of the incident, we are already preparing to move into the community, to assess the extent of damage and see a way out”, said a source that craved anonymity.
