Parents have been urged to create ample time for their children and mentor them in the religious way to make the society and the world a better place to live in.

The Chief Imam of the University of Abuja, Prof. Taofeek Abdulazeez, gave the appeal yesterday in Abuja at the 13th Annual Ramadan Lecture/Iftar of the Abuja chapter of Obafemi Awolowo Muslim Graduates’ Association (UNIFEMGA).

Speaking on the topic, “Fixing a morally Bankrupt Society: The role of the Muslim Home”, the university Don said the society is bankrupt because parents are not living in their children’s world.

According to him, most parents have abandoned the primary responsibility of raising Godly children to pursue worldly things to the detriment of the children.

He expressed fear that children no longer take after their parents because parents are never role models for their wards. He said the social media has taken most parents away from their children while the children engage in activities that are inimical to the society.

“Anybody who destroys the world comes from the family and as such the solutions must come from the family. Father as the head must be friendly to his family by being a peacemaker and a homemaker. An ideal Muslim home should be a paradise to every family member and as the head, the father must show unconditional love by being an adviser, a counselor and a confidant to his wife and the children.

“Family as a unit has a large impact in the society and as such a good family system will correct the ills ravaging our world today.  Thus, Muslims as the successors of Prophet Muhammad must be part of the process that promotes family bond and values in the world,” he said.
