The Kano State Hisbah Board has confirmed the arrest of nine Muslims for allegedly eating in public on Wednesday, the first day of Ramadan.

Hisbah’s Deputy Commander, Mujahid Aminudeen, stated that the suspects include two women and seven men. 

He explained that they were apprehended after being seen eating in broad daylight, which is contrary to the rules of fasting for the Muslim faithful.

“We arrested them and they are with us, where we will teach them the importance of fasting, how to pray, how to read the Qur’an, and how to become better Muslims,” Aminudeen said.

However, he did not disclose when the individuals would be released from custody.

Kano, a predominantly Muslim state, operates Islamic law alongside Nigeria’s civil laws. During every Ramadan, Hisbah officials monitor food outlets and public spaces to ensure compliance with fasting regulations.

While restaurants often continue to operate in areas with significant non-Muslim populations, Muslims are generally prohibited from eating in public between sunrise and sunset during the holy month.
