He died yesterday in Ibadan, Oyo state after a protracted illness at the age of 49.

 

Kwara State Sports Commissioner, Anthony Kayode Towoju, who confirmed the death of the football star, said his corpse was driven to the Yekini family house in Offa to be buried according to Islamic rites this morning.

One of the greatest players Nigeria ever produced, Yekini, scored a record of 34 goals in 54 appearances for the Super Eagles.

He scored Nigeria’s ever FIFA World Cup goal, clutching the goal net thereafter, which became one of the most enduring images in the history of the mundial.

The late footballer who started his football career at the UNTL football club in Kaduna in 1981, born in Kaduna in October 1963.

He left behind two daughters, aged mother and siblings.

“I received a call from my younger sister that brother Rashidi is dead and I’ve been trying to get further details about it, her line is not going,” Mujidat, a sister of the late footballer said in Kaduna yesterday.
