President Obama was alluding to the conspiracy theory when he accused his security establishment of “failure to connect the dots”, with regards to the Mutallab saga. What you need to do to debunk Umar’s well-grounded conspiracy theory on Mutallab is to answer the issues she raised viz: (a) who were those clean shaven Indians at Amsterdam and Detroit? (b)Why was Mutallab allowed to board the Detroit flight from Amsterdam as a “refugee”, a “Sudanese”, and what is the meaning of,”we do it all the time”? (c)Who was the person whole sole interest in such a frightening atmosphere was video coverage? (d)Why was the person who single handedly subdued Mutallab at the risk of his life relegated to the background and not celebrated, given the culture of celebrating heroism in America? (e)What is responsible for the miraculous recovery of the “badly burnt” underwear bomber to the extent that within a few days he was discharged from the hospital and could walk free unaided to attend his trial?
Furthermore, Mrs Umar referred to mainly American sources that corroborated her thesis, but you did not examine and puncture the credibility of these sources. The US Military-Industrial Complex is nourished and sustained by wars and conflict and the coming of Obama, with the rhetorics of “Change” such as: Closure of Guantanamo, bringing home troops from Iraq, Dialogue with the Muslim World, etc, was very bad for business. There must be an enemy at any given time. Undoubtedly, after the collapse of communism, the new enemy was Islamic “Fundamentalism”. All resources must be deployed by the Western World to portray Islam as the enemy and instill its fear among its citizens.
The incident has also made the manufacturers of full body scanners (a subset of the military industrial complex) to laugh heartily all the way to the banks because of the surge in demand. Also, as Mrs Umar has pointed out, it was to ginger reluctant President Obama to take a tougher stand in the “war on terror” which the hawks in the US establishment accuse him of treating with kid gloves. These hawks also have vested interests in corporate America including the media.
Mutallab senior, was like any parent, who disapproves of the ways of his ward, only interested in seeking international assistance in recovering his lost son from Yemen, where the junior Mutallab had run to, without his consent. In retrospect, it was also a smart move because if he had not done so, his vast international and Nigerian assets would have been frozen by now, for being a sponsor of “terrorism”. I therefore cannot see the relevance of Mutallab senior in Kperogi’s assessment.
Drugging Mutallab junior so that he behaves like a moron which Kperogi dismissed, is very possible, given the modus operandi of intelligence agencies like Mossad, CIA, and MI5. Recall that recently, a prominent Iranian nuclear scientist disappeared in Saudi Arabia during last year’s hajj. Another was killed some weeks ago in a car bomb blast near his home in Tehran.
The Mossad also abducted & murdered an Egyptian nuclear scientist working on Iraq nuclear programme in the late 1980’s, in Paris. All these were far older men than the 23 year old Mutallab
Why is there so much “international” outcry against Iran’s nuclear programme and nobody is talking about Israel’s nuclear arsenal? The US is also worried that the nuclear arsenal of the only MUSLIM country in the world (Pakistan) would fall into the hands of Taliban and Alqaeda, hence it is pumping a lot of money into the country to support the tottering government. The worries of the US would have been by far less if it was Nuclear non-Muslim India that was Afghanistan’s neighbour. If all these examples do not show Islam as the enemy to be contained at all costs and the efficacy of the conspiracy theory, what else does?
We should also note that Israel has rebuffed US efforts on resumption of peace talks on the Palestinian Question and, has continued expansion of illegal settlements in the occupied territories. It therefore has every reason to deploy Mossad expertise and drug young Mutallab so as to divert President Obama’s attention away from it to the so called war on terror.
Finally, I want Kperogi to tell us, who is the enemy in the so called war on terror?
Kperogi should always remember that, if testimonies of Arab Americans are anything to go by, no matter how hard he tries to be an American apologist & disparage the Nigerian system (even if justifiably, like the example he gave of the “Boko Haram justice”), he would not escape humiliations at the American & other Western airports, because his name is FAROOQ, even if he is travelling with an American passport.
Conspiracy theory is a potent analytical tool and
a product of hard scholarship. It is neither “lazy” nor “escapist” but can be empirically justified like many scholars of international affairs such as Aisha Umar Yusuf of the Trust newspapers had ably shown.
