The importance of history as a subject to our society cannot be over emphasized. Thank you, Mahmud Jega for the wonderful piece, “As History and Geography bounce back”.
Both subjects have been re-introduced back to our educational curriculum. History is an account of the past which seeks to provide reasons why things happened, the way they did. Among the importance of studying history is that is serves as a tool for nation building.
It leads to the understanding of different ethnic groups inhabiting in a society. It equally teaches cultures and traditions and contributes to moral understanding. History also exposes us to know our identity and heritage. Most of the problems that our society faced today are attributed to the absence of history in our schools.
With the bouncing back of history again, it would help us to learn from the past, adjust the present and make a proper plan for the future. The societal problems such as bad governance, economic hardship, religious intolerance, domestic violence to mention but a few, would be properly addressed by history and would be solved accurately.
The National archives, museums and historical sites that have been given less importance – regain their values as several excursions would be paid to them. However, history will equally help our youths at their early age to choose one of our heroes as their role models to emulate. I implore the Federal Government to kindly erect a structure where the corpse of Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa was dumped and other historical sites. This would make history an interesting subject to the students. As for the geography, it’s also an important subject that we are in high need of.
