I have read with dismay and total disappointment the reaction to Mallam Mohammed Haruna’s column on the above subject by one Etuk Bassey Williams who is said to be the president of the CCSG. Infact the CCSG in Nigeria should be hiding their heads in shame for derailing from their primary responsibilities of defending democracy, support for the rule of laws and fighting against corruption and against any form of impunities.
One wonders if these groups ever existed during the last government when stealing of our common wealth by public office holders was legalized. Where were these groups when persons were sacked from work for reporting financial misappropriations by some government agencies to the government itself? And if these groups claim ignorance of the happenings then what of now that the present administration is exposing the looting by officials of the last government? What public ability or display have they demonstrated in support of the actions of this government towards eradicating corruption and of course impunity? CCSG must be seen to stand in defence of the rights of the citizenry against any manner of impunity and not supporting persons with questionable characters because of political and financial interests. Therefore, Mr.  Williams must take time to know the real functions of civil society groups and not the politically motivated ones like they are today.
