Knowing fully the very bad situation my civil servant/pensioners in my state- Bauchi are, I felt sad when I read the above mentioned article on Daily Trust of Thursday April 7th, 2016 by one Isa Abubakar Azare; for the write up, to my dismay, came up at a time when the civil servants (including the pensioners) in the state are facing economic hardship as about 43,000 of them have not been paid their salaries for months according to various media outlets and in return it affects the economic activities in the state to extent that some unconfirmed reports say the Governor was stoned in Bauchi sometimes last month and this weekend in Azare.
Many things have been discussed in the write up, but my attention has been drawn to biometric exercise for civil servants/pensioners – which he said, would save cost through weeding out ghost workers and unfortunately up to now no official record of ghost workers and about 43,000 workers are not paid for months. What an illogic and unprofessional biometric exercise that cannot be conducted in a weeks or so!
I am happy that the same paper (Daily Trust) of the same date carried a news report which read, ‘2 Bauchi teachers die during screening’, another teacher in the state was also reported to have converted to wood cutting on BBC Hausa
Service 7:30 am programme the following day (8/4/2016) in order to sustain himself, to mention but a few. These are indications that showed what Isa was saying was just contrary to the actual situation in the state.
I believe no right thinking person would not support verification exercise in order to fish out ghost workers, but that does not justify refusal to pay them their salaries for a very long time as is the case in the state. For instance I know of primary school teachers who have never enjoyed their salaries since January.
