I have read several statements on the recent killings of Nigerians in Indonesia for drug related offences and I was shocked by some of them.
Some people even called for the resignation of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, the Minister of State, Khadija Abba Ibrahim as well as Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the SSA to the President on Foreign Affairs and Diaspora for what they called their failure to intervene in the matter.
Indonesia has a law against drug trafficking and any Nigerian visiting that country is aware or should be aware of that law.
The penalty for drug trafficking is death, so why would Nigerians go to that country and engage in that type of crime?  Even if the Nigerian authorities intervene, it will not stop a country from following its laws.
Rather, all those calling for the resignation of the ministers should call on Nigerians to obey the laws of any country they find themselves.
Nigerian youths should also desist from crimes and engage in legal businesses instead.
In Nigeria today, drug abuse is on the increase and efforts should be made to tackle it. It is time for the country to emulate others by putting in place stringent laws against drug trafficking. Anyone caught with illicit drugs within the country should be dealt with to serve as deterrent to others.
