In the report one soldier confirmed a particular case in which he was involved, admitting the offence of raping a pregnant woman. Only God knows how many women this particular soldier took advantage of and raped along with his colleagues. The victim in this case must be commended for damning social the consequences to come out to report while the other women that were apparently raped along with her disappeared to suffer in silence for the rest of her life.
Women groups especially FONWAN and other civil society and NGOs and the National Assembly should ensure that justice must be given to those women. State government of states where soldiers and police are deployed should have or create commissions where abuses, rape, intimidation, harassment and other human right abuses can be reported and prompt actions to be taken.
Three weeks ago, I had to seek the help of a person close to the police to report forceful detention of girls at a particular checkpoint in Kano; I have noticed such unlawful detentions several times on a daily basis and had to seek intervention.
The authorities should caution their men to operate morally and decently and must also be gender sensitive. There are many others who perform their work excellently and in friendly ways so impressive that my 8-year old son expressed a desire to be a policeman or a soldier, which made him to write an excellent essay in school on why he wanted to be either.
These raped women must get the justice they deserve from preying and heartless security personnel. One also hopes that other victims would come out so that society can address the matter squarely.
Women of Lagos should be commended for standing for the plight of Ejigbo women; they can as well stand for these Yobe women too, alongside other women’s groups.
