I have watched several of such sponsored campaigns in both the NTA, AIT, and Channels Television stations and really wondered why the two leading parties must go to that extent before winning the heart of people to vote for them.
It is rather disheartening and, to a large extent a great show of shame, that in this 21st century democracy, we are still using ethnicity, religion and sectionalism as campaign materials, instead of rolling out planned manifestoes and agenda of moving development forward.
In my opinion, both PDP and APC are guilty of this and I have to state that the students of political science in this country and indeed all other students in tertiary institutions will never forgive the architects of these campaigns for poisoning their minds and taking them off from concentrating on what matters most.
However, while accusing NBC of being asleep, Daily Trust and indeed all the other newspapers in this country are equally guilty of carrying these primitive, barbaric, selfish and narrow minded campaigns.
A typical example is what was contained on the following pages of the Daily Trust newspaper of Thursday 12th February, 2015 on pages 1, 7, 38, 39 and 42. All these are not reasons why Nigerians should vote for either Goodluck or Buhari. The fact that these campaigns are paid for does not mean that they must be accepted and published in order to maintain a certain level of good reputation.
So in essence, even the print media are not helping matters and, to me, if this is what politics and campaigns are all about then it is not a venture for honourable and responsible people. All that I can see daily in the print and electronic media are insults of personalities, of culture and religion all in the name of getting elected.
Surely we have come a long way and posterity will judge us for destroying and polluting the minds of our children with such dirty and filthy stuff. I believe that whatever good thing any of the candidates is bringing to this nation in terms of development be it in education, health, agriculture, tourism or any other sector, it is actually a right not privilege for Nigerians.
Failure to differentiate between corruption and stealing is not only despicable but also ungodly.
