On 30th May 2016, Mahmud Jega started his back page Monday column by quoting Late Dr. Shata’s praise for one Muddaha Danraka. In which the praise-singer said an orphaned lion cub shouldn’t be pitied, because it can, hunt for itself. He described President Buhari as that, though not a cub but this, fully-grown political lion. In my own view he was still a cub, until 2015 when he grouped with other ‘cubs’ to beat a ‘lion king’ on the throne. Jega opined that Muhammadu Buhari’s dangerous claws are much clipped by the 1999 constitution, so should be pitied, unlike Danraka in Shata’s praise. Some might be less generous in their assessment of the President’s one-year in office, they might say this lion was never brave all the way, his canines have been dull. That’s left for those folks, anyway.
As for me, after reading Jega’s column, I had to listen to the song again and again. What I found, there is more to the claws of that orphaned lion of Mustafa Danraka in Muhammadu Buhari in this song. The singer started his praise: Muddaha, the only man who’s a 10/10 in the city. And as long as his name is been mentioned, you don’t have to hear his father’s name to know who. Like Muddaha who only few know his father’s name, Danraka is just his birthplace, probably. Just like Daura. Similarly, only a few know of Buhari’s father’s name. Both Muhammadu and Buhari are his name, but whenever the name Buhari is mentioned, you need not to ask ‘which Buhari?’ Shata continued, saying: Whoever abuse or insult this man of people…boys should beat him to death! Lo! Why should he abuse this man? If you want to test this, go and abuse Buhari in his strongholds, no matter the conditions, Danraka will happen to your body.
The song says: Whoever abuses Muddaha without justifications, God send him a disease, cold in his knees, so he can’t move… A fuel scarcity or price hikes doesn’t justify you to abuse Baba. Let me tell you a story of a passenger who was kicked out of car in the dark nights, in somewhere around Bauchi, a place where by last year even your vehicle will not dare to stop in that bush. The passenger was serially criticizing Buhari, the driver tolerated him until they reach the midst of the journey, late in the cold night. You can understand Late Mamman Shata’s prayer in the song, Muddaha Danraka, which has Muhammadu Buhari hidden in it.
