The story entitled, “Separate religion from culture – Soyinka” appeared on page 33 of September 15 edition of Daily Trust.  I hope the professor was quoted out of context. Professor Soyinka thrilled us with his famous telephone conversation in the 1960s, a masterpiece and his other later works. He should know that culture is that complex whole which includes knowledge, belief, art, custom, capabilities and habits acquired by man as a member of society. So religion, Islam, Christianity, traditional religions, Hinduism, voodooism etc are part of culture. Prof. Femi Adekunle, Prof. Wilmot or their students can shed more light on this.
