As a matter of fact, knowing their capability I used to beat my chest that our DSS, given free hand, can be better than the American CIA or Israeli MOSSAD. Let me elaborate on why I draw my conclusion that our DSS is hasty these days in arriving at conclusion. There was an instance where a man was arrested with some arms trying to get into the Federal Radio Corporation premises in Abuja and the next day Marilyn Ogar, spokesperson of DSS, cleared him of any wrongdoing. In another instance, the former Chief of Army Staff, Gen. Ihejirika (retired) was alleged to be involved in sponsoring the terrorist group Boko Haram; and in less than twenty four hours same DSS spokesperson came out to say he couldn’t be involved. I was left to wonder why the hasty defence when the accused himself had not uttered a word.
Any security expert would agree with me that twenty four hours isn’t sufficient time to carryout investigation and come out with reasonable conclusion on matters that concern security issue. Back to the subject matter of clearing Ali Modu Sheriff; if DSS or any other security agencies had been following up on issues regarding his alleged involvement it could have been noted that it wasn’t the Australian hostage negotiator Steven Davis that started implicating Sheriff on the issue of Boko Haram. In 2013, one of the Boko Haram members arrested in Bama also made comments about Sheriff’s alleged involvement with Boko Haram (http://youtu.be/FPUjx-TWSHY). Niger Delta arm of PDP also cried out regarding his alleged involvement with Boko Haram at a time when Sheriff was trying defect to PDP. Mr Sheriff was seen in Chad when our President visited President Idriss Deby to discuss Boko Haram issue and of recent Mr Sheriff was said to be seen at Kano International Airport same day a plane with arms en route to Chad was said to be detained.
Is it by coincidence that Sheriff was in the two places? These are some of the reasons why many likeminded persons will be doubtful of the clearance of Sheriff. I am not saying that Sheriff or Ihejirika is guilty; rather what I am saying there is need to do a thorough job in finding out the truth about the allegation. You see, we are taking things for granted a probable reason why we failed to address issues threatening our security. DSS should remove all sentiments from its duties and let us have its best that we were used to in the past regarding security issues.
