Are officials of the federal government so foolish to agree to pay such allowances that they knew only academic staff deserved them and not non-academic staff? Do the editors know the percentage ratio between academic and non-academic earned allowances?  We have for in-house unions in Nigerian universities, each of which the federal government negotiated with differently and, at different occasions, reached and signed agreement with.
How did you arrive at the notion that earned allowances are only for academics? Do you have copies of the agreement reached and duly signed between federal government and the four university in-house unions? Please stop passing myopic judgement on what you know nothing about. Yes the call for strike by SSANU at this time of CHANGE is not right.
But agreement reached is agreement. It has to be honoured. Let me give you an example of what earned allowance is to non-academic.  A technical staff that works in the laboratory, embalming fresh dead bodies for medical students to use, preparing chemical for chemistry students to use, extracting venom from deadly snake for vaccines, isolating bird flu virus from dead animal for study use, etc, are a few examples.
The federal government decided to give them N30,000 as professional hazard allowance against N333 paid currently as hazard allowance. And you people are saying that non-academic staff members don’t deserve to be given earned allowances. Please what you don’t know you don’t know. Don’t pass judgement on it on what you don’t know.
