Attractions in and around Jos include the largest museum in Nigeria and the Wildlife Park. Children and adults usually pay visit to the Jos zoo during festivals or educational trips.
The zoo is also a source of revenue to the government. On December 2, 2015 a male lion broke out from the wildlife park and caused panic to the people. Lack of a tranquiliser made the management of the facility to kill the lion and save people’s lives. Also, on Wednesday, July 13, 2016, two chimps escaped from the zoo.
It is worthy of note that most of the iron cages where the animals are kept are weak and need to be replaced. This will help to avoid the frequent loss of animals.
The Jos Zoological Garden is in desperate need of assistance from government and other relevant agencies. The state government should kindly replace the old and weak iron cages with new ones while old buildings where the animals are kept should also be renovated. More so, tranquilisers and other related equipment should be provided for the management of the zoo. This will assist in controlling the animals when such cases arise.
