There are a few columnists on national issues that one cannot, but idolise because of their nonpartisan approach to such issues. I must say Farooq Kperogi is one of such few that stand out far apart to be counted.
Sadly, though, a majority of our numerous commentators on national issues, as I see it, fail to be reckoned with, because, most often than not, they allow themselves to be influenced by lucre, or by one of those fallacies an essayist, Jideofor Adibe often passionately, refers to as ‘national fault lines’.
On the recent fuel hike debacle, I must say, Kperogi got it spot on. Indeed, when I read his article last week on this issue, I was almost swayed by this deep seated sentiment I have for President Muhammadu Buhari that I simply dismissed his take offhand by concluding that Kperogi could afford to take that stance on the fuel hike, because he was far away from our shores to have a real taste of what motorists were undergoing during the scarcity of the PMS, which I thought was deliberately, artificially created and orchestrated by the oil cabal in order to force the Buhari administration to continue with the subsidy regime. But having read this weekend, his response to the readers’ missiles on such his seemingly unpopular stance over this issue and some of his recent write-ups on Buhari’s policies, I tend to agree with him to an extent.
Some of us who have been passionate fans & followers of Buhari ever since his military days, his short, eventful sojourn as Head of State in 1983-85, have been having the belief, and still believe that Buhari is such a person that aims at creating a just, equitable and egalitarian polity where the State will be fair to all irrespective of Regional, State, ethnic, religious or class differences. Indeed we believe that he would be humane to all & masses friendly. We believe he is one person that could take head-on, the upper class oppressors as represented in the first two layers of the circle espoused by Kperogi and crush those parasitic elements to shreds.
What could have gone wrong so soon? The question now, is have we lost that belief in Buhari? I must say certainly not. I can’t, as a person says that
I have lost faith and belief in Buhari to still turn things round especially, for the benefit of the majority on the third & fourth rung of the circle. Kperogi’s interrogation of the fuel hike as fraudulent has only strongly opened my eyes to some salient issues that need to be addressed by our dear president. I want to join Kperogi in calling the attention of Buhari to the plight of retired civil servants, in the light of this fuel hike.
