And I am tempted to say that the lesson learnt was that Nigeria would still be in a state of slavery, if and only likes of Mbeki were not here.
But to contradict the writer, at least we have nationalists who struggled for our sovereignty from the colonialists, and Nigerians were no longer at the political and economic mercies of her imperial majesty. Then the hopes were high for the attainment of economic greatness, given the enormous population and the new country’s diversity; the nationalists had vision, passion and wished a better future not only for our dear country but Africa at large. They were true leaders who were not intoxicated with the primitive accumulation of wealth; but those who served us with sense of sacrifice, who commanded attention in the polity through the sobriety of their actions and the precision of their words, who worked late and early, left us at last that mass of people so alive and energetic; who have made for us memories so fruitful of change and wondering expectations beyond any parochial perceptions.
Our current leaders should imbibe on the good leadership spirit which these nationalists displayed and legacies left behind which hitherto we are still the utmost beneficiaries.
