On Tuesday, January 25, a younger brother of the late President, Abdulazeez Musa Yaradua and his elder sister, Hajia Mairo Musa Yar’adua, announced their defection to the CPC. But there are still other members of the Yar’adua family, like Alhaji Yusuf Yar’adua and their mother, Hajia Dada, who have vowed to remain in the PDP.
From all indications, it was the decision of the PDP to give the late President’s daughter, Hajiya Maryam Yar’adua, the party’s ticket for the House of Representatives race for Katsina federal constituency that may have angered the duo of Mairo and Abdulazeez. According to Abdulazeez during the press conference while he registered as a member of the CPC, “the family has no rift with Governor Shema,” the man he described as his brother. However, the hidden truth is the fact that some members of the Yar’adua family may have resolved to work against the daughter of their late brother.
For those familiar with the situation in Katsina State, there has been a growing animosity in the family over the years. However, the saddest aspect of the whole scenario is the role being played by the elders in the family. They have been keeping quiet, allowing the animosity to degenerate. Now, the wife of the late president, Hajia Turai, may be warming up for a showdown. The ultimate victim of the whole saga is the old woman, Hajia Dada, who has been the pillar of strength for the entire family, most especially since the demise of her husband.
The fact that a faction within the family decided to team up with the opposition party, CPC, against the PDP is not cheering news to those of us who have sympathy for the CPC, simply because the action was borne out of the desire to settle family scores. It is good that they are now in CPC, and we pray they will remain there until after the general elections. It is after the elections that their electoral values would be ascertained.
Although the retired Lieutenant Colonel, Abdulazees, proffered a good reason for his decision to join the CPC but there is no doubt about the fact that he is being influenced by Mairo. The problem of the CPC in Katsina today is the recognition given to defectors from the PDP to the party. There is a political stalemate in the state’s gubernatorial primaries because of the ambition of the two defectors from the PDP to the CPC. It is now glaring that they are not in the party to assist General Buhari to build the CPC. They joined simply to exploit the goodwill of Buhari for their selfish desire. Just as Dr Hannatu Musawa noted in her Wednesday, January 26, column at the back page of Leadership newspaper, “an Indian politician described such flippant defectors as politicians ‘ not of the people, but off the people, not for the people but far off the people, not by the people but bye the people.”
According to her, “they appear to be money- minded and commercial and only care for themselves. By pretending to be patriotic, socialists and on the side of the masses, but they are able to generate support. The infuriating factor with such flippant defectors is the sheer double standards – the deceit and the chameleonic nature displayed by them. Defectors often invoke that they were cheated in elections and by their party to justify their action. “But in the layman’s term what this really means is that they had only entered into politics in order to benefit from a government position and, as long. As they do not achieve that position, they will continue to move until the ambition is theirs. If not for this reason, why can’t they stay put in their party and try to correct the situation? May God deliver us from self-centered politicians.
